The lunar landscape
Transportation: Super Jeep
Operated: Summer time
Highlights: Herđubreiđarlindir ● Drekagil gully ● Askja caldera ● Víti explosion crater
Experience the barren interior of Iceland, the lunar-like landscape where NASA trained Apollo astronauts and where the Icelandic outlaws lived in the middle ages. Not to mention the number of trolls, ghosts and other creatures in this area that have haunted travellers for centuries.
From Akureyri we go straight to the highlands and drive across vast stretches of sand and fields of lava on a rugged mountain track towards Mt. Herđubreiđ, Iceland's national mountain. A short stop is made at Herđubreiđarlindir, an oasis in the desert. The Drekagil gully is explored before driving into the Askja caldera where we park next to craters from the 1961 eruption. From there we walk to Lake Askja and Víti, an explosion crater formed in 1875. The more adventurous people have the opportunity to take a bath in the crater pond (don't forget a towel). On the way back we can enjoy a stop at "Mountain Café" in Möđrudalur, the most remote settlement in Iceland.
