It is said that after seeing Dettifoss, europe's most powerful waterfall, up close and personal you will never be the same. Where it domains over its surroundings and bears signs of the force possessed within mother nature.
We start by going straight from Akureyri to Dettifoss 44m high and 100m wide, where a mass of water, mud and sand rumbles into Iceland's most impressive canyon. After a good stop we take a short walk from Dettifoss to Selfoss waterfall.
If possible during wintertime we continue along the barren area of Grjótháls to Hafragilsfoss Waterfall and onto the edge of Jökulsárgljúfur canyon at one of its deepest points, 120m. Then to Vesturdalur valley with Hljóđaklettar, the echoing cliffs, that are world known for their basalt columns that characterize the ancient crater remains.
Next we come down to the imposing horseshoe-shaped canyon Ásbyrgi, surrounded by precipitous cliffs. This place is known to be the meeting place of the pagan Gods. We then take our time to stop at a café when we drive through Húsavík village on our way back to Akureyri.
In springtime, we stop at Tjörnes peninsula where we will find puffins nesting in the impressive cliffs by the coastline. ![]()
